Sumve Nurses and Midwives Training Centre

Sumve Nurses and Midwives Training Centre is located in the northwest corner of Kwimba District in the Mwanza region. The school conducts a two-years training program. Upon successful completion of the course each candidate is awarded a certificate in Nursing and a license to practice Nursing by the Nurses Council of Tanzania.
Sumve School of Nursing and Midwifery is attached to Sumve Designated District Hospital where student nurses and midwives do their clinical practices. The doctor in charge of Sumve Hospital has oversight over the school.
The school has full registration as a Technical Education and Training Institution by the Nation Council for Technical Education (NACTE) with effect from 04th April 2003. The school Registration Number is NO: REG/HAS/018.
Mission
To equip student nurses and midwives with basic nursing education; adequate knowledge, competent skills and appropriate attitudes and values of nursing so as to be able to provide efficient and effective nursing care to individuals, families and the community and to further the healing Ministry of Jesus Christ, to the family of God through promotion and provision of good quality, holistic, affordable, equitable and sustainable health care services delivery especially to those in need.
Vision
The vision of Sumve School of Nursing and Midwives is to maintain an efficient nurses training system and to advocate Jesus Christ’s helping spirit through efficient service to those who are in need of such services as their health conditions may demand, and to represent the good intentions of the Church as the house of God.
History
The White sisters of Our Lady of Africa congregation started the school in 1938. The first student nurses were trained in Swahili language and completed their course in 1940 but the school was not yet registered. The Ministry of Health registered the school in year 1950.
In 1974 the White sisters handed over the school to be lead by Tanzanians, and the school is currently a voluntary agency under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Mwanza. The Mwanza Archdiocesan Health department works collaboratively with the Ministry of Health in all matters concerning academic and administration of the school.
